Welcome to Washington High School Equestrian Teams
WAHSET History

In the year 2000, Washington athletes began hearing whispers of an exciting program in Oregon state which allowed high school equestrians to compete against each other in interscholastic competition. Excitement began to build.

In 2000/2001, 11 athletes from Washington began participating as a cooperative team with Willamette District in Oregon as OHSET members. They were from River Ridge High School, Tumwater High School and Battle Ground High School.

2001/2002 saw 38 athletes competing in Oregon on the cooperative team. They were from River Ridge High School, Tumwater High School, Cascade High School, North Thurston High School, Yelm High School and Wishkah High School.

The Washington coop team became a separate district of OHSETin 2002/2003 and began holding it's own district meets, then traveling to Oregon to compete in the Oregon state championship meet. There were 68 athletes forming the new district from high schools in Cascade, Tumwater, North Thurston, Yelm, Wishkah, Mossyrock, Elma, Black Hills and Eatonville.

In 2003/2004 the Washington district grew to 95 athletes coming from high schools in Cascade, Tumwater, North Thurston, Yelm, Wishkah, Mossyrock, Elma, Eatonville, Aberdeen, Montesano, Rainier and Sequim.

2004/2005 saw growth to 157 athletes coming from Cascade, Tumwater, North Thurston, Yelm, Mossyrock, Elma, Eatonville, Aberdeen, Montesano, Rainier, Sequim, Cheney, Hockinson, Lynden, Medical Lake and Port Angeles.

2005/2006 - The Washington coop team split off from Oregon and Washington (WAHSET) was born, forming our own state competition among Washington High Schools. WAHSET was split into 3 districts; 2 on the Westside and 1 on the eastside. The number of athletes grew to 300 and the number of schools grew to 26.

Growth continued in 2006/2007 to over 500 athletes participating and many new schools joining the competition. For the first time, we exceed stall capacity at our state meet and must bring in temporary stalls.

2007/2008 continues to bring new schools into our program. WAHSET split the Westside in 3 districts in order to keep them to a manageable size. The eastside is rapidly growing also. The excitement continues as our 4 districts prepare for an exciting year of interscholastic competition!
